Nations are not built overnight, nor is progress achieved by coincidence. Behind every milestone of development stand men and women who devoted their lives, intellect, and energy to serving their homeland with sincerity and perseverance. Yesterday, the State of Qatar bade farewell to one of its most distinguished sons, a statesman whose name became closely associated with the country’s modern renaissance and whose career reflected unwavering loyalty and exceptional service to the nation: H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy.

With deep sorrow and profound respect, Qatar, accompanied by a large gathering of citizens and residents, laid to rest H E on Friday at Al-Attiyah Cemetery in Al-Kharaitiyat. The scene of farewell was not merely the departure of a public official, but a moment of collective remembrance for a national figure whose journey mirrored the stages of Qatar’s transformation, from a developing state to a global model of growth, prosperity, and stability.

The life of Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah stands as a testament to dedication in public service. Beginning his professional journey in 1972 at the Ministry of Finance and Petroleum, he embarked on a path that would span more than five decades of distinguished national service. Throughout these years, he assumed responsibilities of increasing significance, progressing through diverse positions in administration, energy, governance, and diplomacy, each role reflecting competence, commitment, and a deep sense of national responsibility.

His legacy is inseparable from the story of Qatar’s energy sector, which emerged under the leadership of visionary figures into one of the strongest pillars of the national economy. Al-Attiyah played a pivotal role in strengthening Qatar’s global position in energy markets, reinforcing its international credibility, and expanding its strategic influence in regional and global forums. His tenure as President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) further reflected the trust and esteem he earned on the international stage.

As Qatar continues its march toward greater progress and achievement, it is fitting to remember that today’s prosperity is the fruit of generations who carried the responsibility of nation-building with sincerity and resolve. It is the harvest of the efforts of the forefathers and those who followed in their footsteps, fulfilling their duty with competence and capability, while placing the interests of the nation above all else.

His passing is undoubtedly a great loss to the State of Qatar. However, great men leave behind legacies that endure far beyond their years.
