Diplomatic ties between Guyana and Qatar are evolving with growing cooperation in investment, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, tourism and other areas. The bilateral relations between the two countries have strengthened significantly, particularly over the past six years as Guyana underwent rapid economic and social transformation.
Guyana and Qatar established formal diplomatic relations on August 23, 1996. Since then the ties have evolved into a broader partnership driven by shared interests and economic opportunities.
The leaders of two countries held talks in Doha on Tuesday and discussed relations and ways to enhance them, particularly in the investment. Besides, President of Guyana met Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday and reviewed cooperation between the two countries and ways to bolster them.
Qatar and Guyana signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday to strengthen cooperation in agriculture and technology. The MoU aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries in crops, livestock and fisheries, and exchange of expertise, training and capacity-building. It also provides for cooperation in the use of modern agricultural technologies in order to boost food security.
Guyana’s emergence as a major energy producer has opened new possibilities for the country and its vast oil resources are being used to transform and diversify the economy.
The two countries have complementary strengths. Guyana could offer land, freshwater, agricultural potential, biodiversity, energy resources and access to the Caribbean and South American markets, while Qatar could contribute capital, technology, expertise and global business networks.
There is scope for cooperation between the two countries well beyond oil, with significant opportunities in agriculture, infrastructure, tourism, hospitality, health, technology, climate security and human capital development.
