Doha: At a diplomatic reception celebrating the 106th anniversary of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic, the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Qatar, H E Mahir Aliyev, emphasised the robust relations between the two nations, highlighting Qatar’s unwavering support for Azerbaijan on various international platforms.
Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H E Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie; Director of the Protocol Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H E Ibrahim Yousif Fakhro; Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam and Dean of the Asian Ambassadors Group HE Mohamed Haji Abu Bakar and several other dignitaries along with the members of Azerbaijan community in Doha were present at the event.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Aliyev praised the significant progress made in bilateral relations, particularly through high-level visits and the signing of 36 Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding covering various fields.
“During the past period, high-level visits of the heads of state of Azerbaijan and Qatar, as well as mutual visits of the officials of both countries were carried out. Within the framework of these visits, 36 Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding covering various fields were signed,” he remarked.
The establishment of embassies in both Doha and Baku further signifies the commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties between Azerbaijan and Qatar, facilitating closer cooperation on political, economic, and cultural fronts.
Ambassador Aliyev also highlighted recent bilateral engagements, including the visit of Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, to Qatar in April 2024. The minister participated in the 3rd meeting of the League of Arab States - Central Asia - Azerbaijan Cooperation and Economic Forum, fostering dialogue and collaboration between the two nations.
Cultural exchanges have played a pivotal role in deepening understanding and fostering goodwill between Azerbaijan and Qatar. Ambassador Aliyev mentioned significant cultural events such as Azerbaijan Culture Days held in Doha in February 2024 and a tree planting event organized in Doha in May 2023 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliyev, the founder of Azerbaijan.
Highlighting the immense potential for economic cooperation, Ambassador Aliyev emphasized Azerbaijan’s favorable business environment and its keen interest in expanding bilateral relations in trade, agriculture, tourism, and renewable energy sectors.
In a significant move to promote Azerbaijani products in the Qatari market, the “Azerbaijan Trading House” was established in Doha. This initiative aims to showcase Azerbaijani products, provide consulting services, and facilitate business relations between the two countries.
The Joint Economic, Trade, and Technical Commission between Azerbaijan and Qatar continue to play a vital role in coordinating efforts to implement bilateral agreements. The upcoming meeting of the commission in Doha this year is expected to further enhance cooperation between the two nations.
The Azerbaijani community in Qatar, comprising approximately 350 individuals, contributes significantly to the social and economic fabric of the country, with many working in key sectors such as energy, hospitality, education, and healthcare.
