DOHA: Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Al Thani Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) has distributed five tonnes of food to workers of Umm Salal Municipality to help them prepare for the fasting month of Ramadan.
The Foundation said it will soon start providing cold water and insulation bags to keep food hot at worksites.
The food packs contain 25 kilograms of 12 types of food, including rice, flour, edible oil, kidney beans, sugar, milk and dates. Some 210 workers benefited from the initiative.
The packs have been distributed by RAF Arm, Qatari Foods House (QFH) in collaboration with the Municipality. Most materials were collected by students of Independent Schools as a part of a programme launched by QFH to encourage students to perform charity, said a release.
“The schools participating in the programme have collected more than 40 tonnes of ration materials,” said Salah Mohammad Al Mahmoud, Head of QFH.
“There is tough competition among schools. Everyone wants to collect as much as possible; one school collected more than five tons of food, he added. QFH not only distributes ration packets to workers and needy families, but also carries fresh surplus meals from restaurants to them”.
“QFH is all set to launch some more projects to support the needy people. The projects include distribution of cold water to labourers on worksites in a bid to prevent dehydration in the scorching heat of the summer season. The workers will also be provided insulation bags to keep their food hot and eatable,” said Al Mahmoud.
“It is our social responsibility to help the weaker sections of the community. QFH is shouldering accountability to support all needy people in the country,” said Ali bin Yousuf Al Kuwari, a senior official from RAF.
“RAF is ready to implement more charity projects in collaboration with the Municipality to support workers and needy families. It is a beginning of our cooperation. We will keep doing our best to support the poor, whether citizens or expatriates, said Al Kuwari.
Umm Salal Municipality is very big, with more than 10,000 workers, said Mansur Hasan Al Naimi, head of the Services Section of the Municipality.
“Officials from the municipality show concern for them. We coordinate with charity organisations to serve them on various occasions, like National Day and on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan,” he added.
