Brussels: Around 2,297 journalists and media staff have been killed globally by their antagonists for reporting news on war, revolution, crime and corruption.
The International Federation of Journalists announced this in a new report to be made public next week.
The IFJ report says 'killers continue to act with impunity'.
"The last ten years were the most dangerous," says IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger, with 2006 the worst year of all with 155 killings.
The IFJ says the report "25 years of contribution towards safer journalism" highlights the worsening climate of impunity which has helped killers get away with murder and turn journalists into soft targets.
In 1990, the IFJ's first year of collating data on journalists killed in the line of their duty, the toll was 40. From 2010 the killings have remained over 100 per annum.
The United Nation has reiterated its stance to protect media personnel.
