In recognition of cricket team’s fine run in the previous season, Galfar Al Misnad hosted a colourful ceremony to honour it’s players with trophies and cash awards at Radisson Blu Hotel in Doha recently. Galfar Al Misnad, arguably the best cricket club in Qatar, almost made a clean sweep of trophies in the last domestic season.
The club, led my Qatar’s vice-captain Mohammad Rizlan, made it to all the four finals last season winning the trophy on three occasions.
Galfar Al Misnad completed hat-trick of titles in the season when they clinched the popular Ramadan Twenty20 tournament, thrashing Malabar XI by eight wickets in the final.
They had earlier won Qatar Cricket Association’s One-Day Tournament and shared the Qatar Airways One-Day trophy after the final was tied.
Galfar’s players like Rizlan, batsman Tamoor Sajjad, all-rounder Iqbal Hussain and seasoned batsman Kamran Khan have often been winning awards in the domestic tournaments for their individual performance.
The team’s winning percentage in 2017 remained over 90 percent.
Currently, four Galfar players - Rizlan, Tamoor, Iqbal, Kamran are also representing Qatar’s national cricket team. The trophies and cash awards were distributed by Galfar Executive Director Satish G Pillai and Gul M Khan Jadoon, who was representing Qatar Cricket Association.
“We wanted to motivate our cricketers who made us proud,” said G Pillai on the sidelines of the ceremony.
“Sports is priority of Galfar Al Misnad and we look forward to give all possible support to our players,” he added in his remarks. Captain Rizlan thanked top brass of Galfar Al Misnad for their support to team.
“We are lucky to have a very supporting management which keeps on motivating the players to take out the best results.
“The club has own cricket field and net facilities. We are among the few teams to have own nets facilities under lights. “We also have modern equipment like bowling machine and advanced gym facilities,” he said.
“Our coaching team led by seasoned Saman Fonseka (Head Coach) is very competent.
“I would like to specially thank Mr. Satish G Pillai (Executive Director) for his tremendous support along with Mr. Anupam Kar (GM Finance) and Mr. Sreekumar S. (Manager - Galfar Sports). Without their support and encouragement this success wasn’t possible,” he added.
“We are in a new season now and we look forward to live up to expectations of the management with sheer hard work. Clearly we have talented players,” said Rizlan.
