The Ministry of Economy and Commerce has confiscated 8,968 high-glow lamps for not meeting the standards of the country.

The lamps were seized during an inspection campaign targeting electrical appliances stores to ensure their compliance with a decision banning import and sale of high-glow lamps.

The campaign was launched to ensure compliance of electrical appliance stores across the country with a decision barring import and sale of high-glow lamps.

The electrical appliance stores that violated the decision were penalised in line with article 6 of law number (8) of 2008 on consumer protection. The law prohibits sale, display and promotion of substandard and fraudulent products. A product is considered fraudulent if it fails to meet standards or has expired, said a release.

Violations of law number (8) of 2008 are penalised by administrative closures and fines ranging between QR 3,000 and QR 1 million, in line with applicable consumer protection laws.

The decision to ban the import and sale of high-glow lamps is aimed at preserving the country’s energy resources, promoting sustainability and protecting the environment in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. The decision is in implementation of the standards imposed on goods and products manufactured or imported from abroad, in order to protect the health and safety of individuals and society.

The Ministry stated that it is determined to protect consumer rights and will intensify its inspection campaigns to crack down on all violations of the consumer protection law. The Ministry also said it will refer violators of laws and ministerial decrees to the competent authorities, who will take appropriate action against perpetrators in order to protect the rights of consumers.

The ministry urges all consumers to report to the Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud department through Call Centre: 16001 or Email: info@mec.gov.qa if they come across any violation.
