Doha: The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) yesterday opened the third Gulf Universities Championship (GUC), marking the first time the regional tournament is being held in Qatar.
Held under the patronage of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the championship represents a significant step in the development of university sport across the Gulf, bringing together university teams to compete across four sports.
Building on the previous two editions held in Kuwait, this year’s championship has expanded to include nine participating universities and 20 teams, reflecting the growing reach of the tournament and the increasing opportunities for university students to participate in competitive sport. A key development in this edition is the introduction of women’s volleyball, with five teams competing in the tournament.
This addition strengthens opportunities for female university athletes to participate in regional competitions and showcases the importance of providing inclusive sporting opportunities within university communities.
The championship features men’s futsal, men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball and men’s basketball, with competitions taking place across three venues on the UDST campus.
Commenting on the significance of hosting the championship in Qatar for the first time, President of UDST, Dr. Salem Al-Naemi, said: “Hosting the Gulf Universities Championship for the first time in Qatar reflects our commitment to advancing university sport and creating opportunities for students to excel beyond the classroom. We are proud to welcome universities from across the region to UDST and to contribute to a championship that encourages healthy competition, strengthens regional connections and supports the development of future leaders.”
Director of the Sport & Wellness Directorate at UDST, Hamad Alkuwari, added: “This edition marks an important development for the championship, with increased participation across four sports and the introduction of women’s volleyball.
At UDST, we are committed to providing an environment where university athletes can compete, develop their abilities and build connections with their peers. Hosting this regional event also demonstrates our readiness to support the continued growth of university sport in Qatar and across the Gulf.”
The championship is supported by Qatar Airways, Rayyan Water, and Baladna, with additional contributions from the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation, the Qatar Basketball Federation, Qatar football association, the Qatar Volleyball Federation and The Torch Hotel. The third Gulf Universities Championship runs until 31 October 2026.
