The Animal Resource Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has inspected more than 375,133 livestock in the summer season.
Of the total number of livestock checked for fitness, there were 358,662 sheep, 5,168 cows, and 11,303 camels, said a senior official at the Ministry.
About the violations registered by the department in this regard, Farhoud Hadi Al Hajri, Director of Animal Resource Department said that that most of the animals' import usually started before Ramadan, and the percentage of shipments which were not allowed in the country was the only 1 per cent of the total imports.
He also said that if they discovered an animal at the state ports infected by an epidemic or infectious diseases, the importer is responsible to return the livestock back on his expense.
“The exporting countries must check the livestock before sending them to Qatar. When livestock reaches here the authorities concerned take a sample for laboratory tests to make sure that the animals are free from any disease. We are also trying to accelerate the shipment process release”, said Al Hajri.
He added that the veterinary quarantines were the first line of defence to prevent infectious diseases.
