DOHA: The issue of jailed Qatari loan defaulters has received wider attention in the community, with the regulatory authority for charities announcing a six-month-long campaign to secure their release.
The move follows a fundraising drive launched by the Sheikh Thani bin Abdullah Al Thani Foundation for Humanitarian Services to support loan defaulters during Ramadan, which raised more than QR6.03m with its first radio programme on Saturday.
Other charities have joined the initiative, under the supervision of the regulatory authority.
The other organisations participating in the six-month campaign are Qatar Charity, Sheikh Eid bin Mohammad Charity Organisation and Jassem and Hamad bin Jasem Charity Foundation.
Several subcommittees have been set up for the campaign under a supervisory committee headed by the director general of the Regulatory Authority, Al Sharq reported. A committee has been assigned to study the cases. It will draw up a list of loan defaulters and suggest a mechanism to get them freed, QNA reported.
