ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Foreign Office on Thursday slammed moves by the Indian government to establish separate townships for Kashmiri Pandits in Occupied Kashmir, terming them efforts to alter the Muslim majority in the disputed region.
In its weekly press briefing in Islamabad today, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam said that moves to “dissolve the Muslim population of Kashmir” were in contradiction of the United Nations’ resolutions.
She said that Kashmir is a disputed territory and any decisions relating to the region can be made only through a referendum.
She said that minorities were being settled in Occupied Kashmir by establishing special townships or zones.
Any efforts to alter the Muslim majority contradict the UN's resolutions on Kashmir, she said.
Several demonstrations have been held in Occupied Kashmir against the Indian government backed programme to rehabilitate Kashmiri Pandits in separate townships in the disputed valley.
Kashimir Hurriyat leaders oppose separate zones for Kashmiri Pandits and have called for protests and shutter-down strikes across the valley over the issue.
