All Lulu outlets observed ‘Earth Hour’ on Saturday. Lulu group, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiative for a better environment, has introduced various other measures for reducing the carbon footprints. Lulu is the first supermarket chain in the Middle East to introduce biodegradable shopping bags. They had introduced biodegradable shopping bags at all Lulu outlets. The introduction of these biodegradable bags is a part of Lulu’s long term responsible policy of sustainability.
These measures start right from designing energy efficient buildings to biodegradable plastics and now have even initiated shifting to LEDs from the conventional lights to reduce its energy consumption and pollution. Reduction in water usage and waste reduction is also been undertaken. Lulu has also pioneered in energy efficient refrigeration units and bakery ovens and its effort to control the carbon emission goes even with the transport of goods delivered to stores with effective logistic managements. Lulu also imparts training programmes for their staff for the best practices in the industry to minimise the energy consumption and to reduce carbon footprint. Lulu Hypermarket is also working with suppliers to reduce packaging and encourage recycling. The Peninsula
