Doha, Qatar: Families and residents are increasingly turning in large numbers to the country’s world-class indoor attractions, transforming the traditionally quiet summer months into a period of vibrant activity and community engagement.
With daytime highs are being recorded in recent days, climate-controlled venues have become essential refuges. Shopping malls, museums, indoor theme parks and sports facilities report a marked increase in visitors seeking both entertainment and respite from the heat.
The museum’s immersive galleries and storytelling experiences continue to draw steady crowds, while the Museum of Islamic Art hosts special summer exhibitions and family workshops that blend culture with comfort.
Malls across the capital have evolved into full-day destinations. Places such as Mall of Qatar, Villaggio, City Center Doha and Doha Festival City offer ice rinks, cinemas, gaming zones and themed summer camps for children. “We enrolled our son in a summer camp at the mall,” said an expatriate James Carter. “It keeps him busy, and we get some shopping done. Everyone wins.”
Indoor theme parks are proving particularly popular. Doha Quest, located in Msheireb Downtown at Doha Oasis, features more than 30 rides and attractions, including roller coasters, drop towers and virtual reality experiences, all within a fully air-conditioned environment. Tickets start at QR235, with the park open from Sunday to Tuesday between 2pm and 10pm, and longer hours later in the week. Families praise its mix of thrills for older children and gentler options for younger ones.
Sports enthusiasts are also staying active indoors. Facilities offering rock climbing, such as Boulder in the 2022 Building, provide day passes from QR129 and women-only sessions. Indoor padel courts operated by Padel In at Aspire and City Center attract players of all ages, with sessions starting around QR200 for 90 minutes. Virtuocity at Doha Festival City combines arcades, virtual reality and escape rooms for those seeking interactive entertainment.
The surge in indoor visits reflects broader efforts by authorities to ensure year-round quality of life. Government investment in climate-controlled public spaces and programming has helped turn summer into a season of opportunity rather than restriction. Cultural venues and community centres report high demand for workshops, language courses and fitness programmes.
Residents and operators alike note that the combination of modern infrastructure and diverse offerings allows Qataris and expatriates to remain socially active and productive despite the heat. From educational museum visits to high-energy theme park outings and sports, indoor attractions are enabling families to make the most of the season.
