Washington---China recently deployed two artillery pieces on one of its artificial islands in the contested South China Sea but has since removed them, US defense officials said Friday, citing surveillance imagery.
The two motorized artillery pieces were spotted on a manmade island about a month ago in the Spratly Islands, a defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.
The heavy weapons appear to have been withdrawn since then, the official added.
