Washington--Shinzo Abe became the first Japanese prime minister in history to address a joint meeting of the US Congress on Wednesday, seeking to deepen ties in the face of controversy over his views of World War II.
"Today, I am honored to stand here as the first Japanese Prime Minister ever to address your joint meeting. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you for inviting me," he said before lawmakers.
