Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that Venezuela's airspace will be reopened to commercial flights, signaling a further shift in relations between Washington and Caracas.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting at the White House on Thursday, Trump said he had spoken with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, and informed her of plans to fully reopen Venezuelan airspace.

He said he had instructed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, along with other relevant authorities, including the military, to implement the decision as soon as possible, ideally by the end of the day.

Trump also said that the sale of Venezuelan oil would generate significant revenue for both countries, describing US-Venezuelan relations as "very good".

Earlier this month, Trump said the United States would oversee Venezuela's affairs during what he described as a safe and orderly transition of power, following a military operation that led to the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife and their removal from the country.
