Symposium discusses climate change impact on environment, food security in Qatar

Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, the Ministry of Municipality, and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) organised on Thursday a scientific symposium on the technical and geological agreement concluded between HBKU and the US space agency (Nasa).

The agreement aims to formulate a project to establish a scientific satellite for mapping groundwater and studying melting ice in the north and south poles of the Earth to study the rise of sea levels and analyse the resulting impact on the State of Qatar to deepen understanding in the aquifers in support of national goals to achieve food and water security in the country, as well as knowing the impact of rising water levels as a result of the melting of the polar ice caps on beaches, coasts and cities in Qatar.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed Al Thani, President of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) Dr. Eng. Saad bin Ahmad Al Muhannadi and several officials, experts and consultants in the concerned authorities attended the symposium.

Dr. Essam Heggy, the representative of Nasa, who presented the symposium, reviewed the outputs of this agreement in line with the competencies of the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change and the Municipality related to climate change and geological studies and their effects on the environment, food security, infrastructure and others.

In a related context, the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change, and the Municipality, in scientific and research cooperation with HBKU, will develop a comprehensive plan and general strategy that takes into account the impact of climate change on coasts and beaches, as well as scientific and technical methods to protect them from erosion and corrosion and ways to benefit from global experiences in this field.
