New York: The United Nations warned Monday of the growing risk of further violations in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in Sudan.
In a statement, the UN confirmed that multiple, disturbing reports indicate that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are committing atrocities, including executions, after seizing control of large parts of El Fasher and Bara in North Kordofan State in recent days.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that the RSF's control of El Fasher represents a "horrific escalation" of the conflict, noting that the problem lies not only in the ongoing fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF, but also in the growing foreign interference that is undermining prospects for a ceasefire and a political solution.
The UN Human Rights Office also confirmed that it had received reports of summary executions of civilians attempting to flee, with indications that the killings were tribally motivated, as well as the killing of individuals no longer participating in hostilities.
The Office noted that it had received multiple disturbing videos showing dozens of unarmed men being shot or killed, surrounded by Rapid Support Forces fighters who accused them of being Sudanese army fighters.
