DOHA: Qatar’s fight against cancer has got a further boost with the launch of Qatar National Cancer Registry by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH).
The registry aims to provide integrated national data on all cancer cases diagnosed in the country every year.
It contains information sourced from all public and private health care providers.
A new electronic data reporting programme has been developed for the registry by the SCH staff.
Registration of cancer cases will be carried out electronically by hospitals, in addition to laboratories and private diagnostic centres.
Information will be scientifically checked and reviewed.
The registry’s database is connected with relevant entities to ensure data is updated.
Dr Faleh Mohamed Hussain Ali, Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Affairs, SCH, said the registry will provide comprehensive information about cancer cases in the state.
This comprehensive information can be used for health planning and development and scientific research.
Dr Faleh said it is one of the significant outcomes of the National Cancer Strategy which has achieved remarkable progress since its launch in 2011.
The registry is prepared by staff who have achieved an international accreditation to register cancer cases.
The registry is part of the SCH’s National Cancer Programme, which is based on the National Cancer Strategy to reduce the burden of cancer while ensuring that the best services in the world are delivered to patients.
Qatar is among a few countries in the region whose cancer data has been accepted by World Health Organisation (WHO).
Qatar cancer data was also published in the 10th edition on cancer cases (Ci5-X) issued by International Agency for Research in Cancer, which is part of WHO.
