DOHA: Widam (Qatar Meat and Livestock Company) sold an estimated 25,000 Australian and 8,500 Syrian and Jordanian sheep during Eid Al Adha festivities.
Syrian and Jordanian sheep were made available to Qataris at subsidised rates. One of the main government initiatives this year was that it subsidised locally-bred sheep of Syrian and Jordanian origin to encourage local breeders and their trade.
The idea is to attract more investment in this line of business. As a result, the locally-bred sheep competed quite ably with their imported counterparts.
