KUWAIT CITY: Russia's foreign minister is in Kuwait at the start of a three-nation tour of Gulf Arab states over the ongoing diplomatic crisis.

Sergey Lavrov's visit to Kuwait City on Monday marks the first high-level diplomatic visit by Russia over the crisis, which began on June 5. Lavrov also will visit Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on his trip.

Kuwait's ruler has tried to mediate an end to a blockade by four Arab nations against Qatar, as have the United States, France and other world powers.

Lavrov met with the Emir of Kuwait H H Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

During the meeting, Lavrov expressed hope that Kuwait and Russia proceed towards the implementation of the agreements signed during the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's visit to Russia in 2015.

Lavrov said that his visit comes to follow-up to the implementation of the agreement between the Emir of Kuwait and the Russian President Vladimir Putin to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinate positions on issues of mutual interest.

Lavrov also met with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister, Sheikh Sabah al-Khaled al-Sabah.
