DOHA: Argentina conclude their FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage campaign against Jordan with the two nations heading into the match with contrasting objectives.
The reigning world champions have already secured a place in the Round of 32 and sealed top spot in the group after consecutive victories over Algeria and Austria. Jordan, meanwhile, have been eliminated after defeats in their opening two matches.
Despite already securing qualification, Argentina are expected to approach the match with the same professionalism and tactical discipline that have characterised their tournament. Head coach Lionel Scaloni has insisted every player in his squad is expected to perform at the highest level, with the final group match offering another opportunity to build momentum ahead of the knockout rounds.
Speaking before the match, Scaloni confirmed Lionel Messi will start on the bench as the captain's workload is managed ahead of the knockout stage. “Leo will start on the bench. Leo will come in a little bit later.”
Scaloni also dismissed suggestions that Argentina would field a weakened side simply because qualification had already been secured. “Those that are playing deserve to play. They are part of the team. It doesn’t matter if the points are decisive or not—we always play to win.”
Even without Messi in the starting lineup, Argentina boast one of the deepest squads in international football. Julian Alvarez is expected to lead the attack alongside Lautaro Martinez, while Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister and Rodrigo De Paul provide creativity and balance in midfield. At the back, Cristian Romero leads the defence in front of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, one of the tournament's standout performers.
Messi's influence, however, remains impossible to ignore. The Argentina captain has scored all five of his side's goals in victories over Algeria and Austria, becoming the all-time leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history. Although expected to feature from the bench, his presence gives Argentina another attacking option should Scaloni call upon him in the second half.
Jordan approach the match with a different objective. Already eliminated, they will be eager to end their first FIFA World Cup campaign with a disciplined performance against the defending champions. Head coach Jamal Sellami acknowledged the size of the challenge while praising Argentina's achievements.
“Playing against the world champions is an honour for us. Whether Messi starts or not, Argentina remains one of the strongest teams in football.”
Jordan are expected to adopt a compact defensive shape, looking to frustrate Argentina and strike on the counterattack. Mousa Al Tamari remains their main attacking threat, with his pace and dribbling central to their hopes of creating chances.
Tactically, Argentina are expected to dominate possession from the opening whistle, using quick passing and intelligent movement to stretch Jordan's defence. Scaloni's side have combined defensive solidity with clinical finishing throughout the tournament. Jordan, meanwhile, will look to remain organised, minimise mistakes and make the most of any counterattacking opportunities.
Although the match has little impact on qualification, it remains important for both sides. Argentina aim to preserve their perfect group-stage record and build confidence ahead of the knockout rounds, while Jordan seek to end their debut World Cup campaign on a positive note.
On paper, Argentina are overwhelming favourites. Even with squad rotation expected, Scaloni's side have the quality and depth to control proceedings. Should Messi make his anticipated appearance from the bench, supporters could once again witness the influence of the World Cup's all-time leading scorer.
