CAIRO: Former Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit will assume his post as the new Arab League Secretary-General this week.

Abul-Gheit was elected as the new head of the Cairo-based body in March, replacing Nabil al-Arabi, who term expires this month.

“Abul-Gheit will take office on July 1,” a source in the league’s general secretariat said in a statement.

Abul-Gheit will be the league’s 8th secretary-general since the body was established in 1945.

He will serve a renewable 5-year term.
