Ahmed Essa Al Sulaiti, Acting Director of the office of the State of Qatar to the World Trade Organization (WTO) participating in the meeting.
The State of Qatar chaired the meeting of the World Trade Organization Committee on Anti-Dumping Practices in International Trade, which was held today in the Swiss city of Geneva for one week. The Committee was chaired by Ahmed Essa Al Sulaiti, Acting Director of the office of the State of Qatar to the World Trade Organization (WTO), who was unanimously nominated for the position of chairing the committee for a period of two years.
The meeting featured previewing the policies adopted by member States in the field of anti-dumping in international trade, in addition to showcasing the procedures that are being put in place to notify member States about the approved mechanisms or complaints that are filed to the organization. Alongside the main meeting, sideline meetings were organized convening the Informal Group on Anti-Circumvention, and the Working Group on Implementation.
It is worth noting that anti-dumping is one of the most important tools for protecting free competition in the international trading system, as the first article of Law No. (2) of 2019, on supporting the competitiveness of national products and combating harmful practices to them in international trade, defined dumping as “the export of a product into the country at an export price less than the normal value of the similar product in the exporting country in the normal course of trade”.
The Committee on Anti-dumping Practices forms part of the WTO Council for Trade in Goods. It is responsible for supervising the implementation of the Anti-Dumping Agreement (AD Agreement).
The State of Qatar has been part of the WTO since its establishment in 1995. The organization aims to promote free trade by regulating trade negotiations and acting as an independent mediator in settling trade disputes, providing member States with rules that support the exchange of goods and services, and promotes intellectual property protection.
