LONDON: The commission set up by the Scottish Premier League (SPL) to look into alleged undisclosed payments to players at fallen Glasgow giants Rangers is due to announce its findings today.
The SPL said yesterday the commission appointed in relation to “RFC 2012 Plc (now in liquidation) and Rangers FC and chaired by Lord (William) Nimmo Smith” would publish its written decision at noon local time (1200GMT) today.
The probe centres on payments made through the Employee Benefit Trusts (EBT)set up by former Rangers chairman David Murray.
Smith, formerly one of Scotland’s most senior judges, headed up a three-man panel also featuring two lawyers that started hearing evidence on January 29.
The inquiry started before the original Rangers compant was consigned to liquidation, with the new company or newco Rangers refusing to cooperate with the investigation.
Rangers called for the investigation to be halted and warned that the ultimate sanction of title-stripping could see fans refuse to attend away games in future.
Scotland’s most successful club, Rangers were expelled from the SPL because of their financial problems and demoted into the Third Division, the fourth and lowest tier of Scottish professional football before the start of this season.AFP
