QRCS and KRCS volunteers distributing food aid among internally displaced people in Somalia.
Doha, Qatar: Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) in cooperation with Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has completed the “Food Parcels for IDP Camps” project in Somalia.
At a total cost of QR 713,441, the project is aimed at alleviating the suffering and enhancing food security of affected families in the main destinations of internally displaced people (IDPs).
Diverse food parcels were distributed to 2,084 families, or 14,588 people, in need of emergency food supplies. Coordinated with the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), the food aid distributions served IDP camps and drought-affected villages in the outskirts of Dusmareb, Galmudug State of Somalia.
The one-month food parcels were jointly donated by KRCS (1,200 parcels) and QRCS (884 parcels. Each parcel contained 66.5kg of food staples such as flour, rice, sugar, cooking oil, powdered milk, and dates.
Ahmed Adam Hamid, head of QRCS’s office in Somalia, stated, “QRCS continues to pursue its humanitarian efforts in Somalia, in cooperation with the local authorities and communities, which are always proactive in working with humanitarian partners to provide basic and life-saving aid, as well as protect the women, men, and children affected by disasters and conflicts.
Hamed highlighted the role of KRCS as a donor to this food aid project, which was the second under the joint intervention to reduce the impact of drought on the poor Somali people, as part of the bilateral strategic cooperation between the two fellow National Societies.
“We reiterate our commitment to working closely with all donors, who make humanitarian work possible to alleviate the suffering and preserve the dignity of the underserved Somali people,” he added. “We will collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure respect for humanitarian principles and secure all the resources needed for the success of our interventions throughout the country”.
