Doha: Gulf English School (GES) has won ‘The Most Active Eco School’ Award at the annual award ceremony for ‘Green Programme for Schools’.
Having joined the programme this February, GES students have worked hard to promote a greener school as part of the school’s ‘Save the Earth’ initiative.
They have been learning about global warming and pollution and made aware of changes needed to protect the Earth.
The programme raises global eco awareness by providing schools with tools to remind students to turn off lights when not using, not to waste water and to reuse plastic bottles.
Sarah Dickins, Deputy Head Pastoral for GES Juniors, said: “By reducing the amount of electricity we use, reusing our plastic bottles and thinking more about what we throw away, we have become a more eco-friendly school – and this is just the start.
“We are delighted to have received the award for being the most active eco school and our students are thinking of new and innovative ways to help our school become greener.
“The programme chimes with the school’s vision and mission to provide a well-rounded education to our students so they achieve their personal best and become responsible global citizens.”
The student council of those aged 7-11 brought enthusiasm and energy to bear to set up the programme. They placed green awareness stickers around the school and delivered an assembly address to the school to explain the programme.
They also spoke to the classes they represented to set up recycling areas and introduced a suggestions box in reception to collect ideas from students and staff about going green.
