Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Municipality has urged people to slaughter their Eid Al-Adha sacrifices only at designated abattoirs, stressing that the measure is essential to protecting public health and ensuring the safety and quality of meat consumed during the festive season.
In a public awareness campaign issued ahead of Eid Al-Adha, the ministry called on families to prioritise safe and hygienic slaughtering practices, warning against the use of roaming butchers or conducting slaughter operations in unapproved locations.
The ministry said official slaughterhouses provide a secure and clean environment that guarantees the proper handling of sacrificial animals in accordance with approved veterinary and health standards.
“For your health and the health of your family, ensure your sacrifice is slaughtered at authorised abattoirs,” the ministry said, adding that the process helps deliver high-quality meat while reducing health risks.
According to the ministry, specialised veterinary teams and inspection staff have intensified monitoring and oversight inside slaughterhouses during the Eid season. The campaign highlighted that veterinary inspections are conducted before, during and after slaughter to ensure animals are free from diseases and fit for consumption.
Officials noted that the veterinary control procedures form part of wider efforts to strengthen food safety, protect public health and provide integrated services to the public during one of the busiest periods of the year for slaughterhouses across the country.
The ministry also advised the public on how to properly select sacrificial animals before purchase.
It said healthy animals should be free from visible defects and diseases, while their eyes should appear bright and clear without redness or signs of infection.
Other indicators of a healthy sacrifice include intact and healthy wool that is not pale or damaged, as well as a body condition that is neither weak nor emaciated. The ministry added that buyers can check the condition of the animal by feeling the vertebrae along the back to ensure it is not excessively thin.
In addition, healthy sacrificial animals should display signs of activity and vitality, reflecting their overall wellbeing and suitability for slaughter.
The awareness campaign comes as municipal authorities continue preparations for Eid Al-Adha by strengthening veterinary supervision, enhancing slaughterhouse operations and encouraging the public to follow approved health and safety practices throughout the holiday period.
