'Qatar to continue its leading role for global sustainable development'

Doha: The State of Qatar participated yesterday in the Economic and Social Council’s Follow-up of the 2022 Financing for Development Forum, which is being held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Qatar's delegation participating in the forum was headed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H E Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi. 

In a recorded speech delivered during the general discussion of the forum, Al Muraikhi said Qatar, under the guidance of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and in line with Qatar’s commitment and keenness to support the issues of the least developed countries, the country was proud to host the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries, with the second part of it taking place in Doha from March 5 to 9 in 2023. 

He stressed that the issue of sustainable development was a highly important issue for Qatar, which is continuing its rapid development path. 

He noted that it has taken ambitious measures at the national level to implement the 2030 sustainable development plan, and highlighted that the country made significant progress in that regard.

He pointed out that the efforts of Qatar were not limited to the national level, pointing out that it was keen to continue its leading role and work closely with partners at the international level, including the bodies and entities of the United Nations, pointing out that Qatar is a key partner in providing support through bilateral and multilateral agreements, and the implementation of development projects that have a positive impact in responding to challenges and accelerating the wheel of inclusive and sustainable growth. 

He highlighted that Qatar was a contributor to the United Nations Development Programme accelerator labs network, with a contribution of $20million to support these labs. 

He added that Qatar announced, during the High-level Pledging Event on Supporting the Humanitarian Response in Afghanistan held on March 31 of 2022, a contribution of $25million. 

The Minister of State said that Qatar during 2020 committed to financing of $533million to many partners in the field of development and humanitarian assistance. This included donating $10million and signing agreement with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to enhance equitable and sustainable access to vaccines in lower-income countries. 

He said that the international community can count on Qatar to deal with challenges and move forward towards implementing the sustainable development plan 2030.
