DOHA: More than nine million people visited Katara last year, said Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti. Addressing press conference, Dr Al Sulaiti said the visitors to Katara come from around the world especially from the GCC region.
“Last year many people from around the world especially from neighbouring countries visited Katara. We had more than nine million visitors last year while in 2013 the number of visitors reached 6.7 million. We believe the number will increase dramatically this year,” he said, in response to a question from The Peninsula.
Katara has proved its appeal and cemented a good reputation as a major tourist destination in the region owing to its role as a cultural hub hosting cultural events and festivals.
These events, he said, “reflect the role of Katara and its relentless pursuit to encourage communication and exchange of culture between different countries.”
Among the events Katara has organised were the African Festival, the Festival of Ecuador, the Chinese Cultural Celebration, the First Turkish Festival, the Korean Cultural Week, the Iranian Musical Evening, the Gallery of the Traditional and Contemporary Arts in Uzbekistan, the Indian Cultural Week, the Moroccan Handicraft Week, the Palestinian Heritage Week and the Scottish Day, Dr Al Sulaiti said.
