Dhaka: Bangladesh recorded 2,249 mosquito-borne dengue fever cases in the 24 hours leading into Sunday morning, marking the highest single-day infection tally documented this year.
According to the latest data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the country also recorded seven more deaths in the 24 hours until 8 am local time on Sunday.
The latest DGHS figures brought the total number of dengue cases to 123,948 and the death toll to 384 this year.
Dengue deaths this year included 139 in October, 148 in September, 43 in August, 36 in July and 13 in June.
Dengue fever, typically a monsoon-season illness in Bangladesh, is now spreading beyond its usual June-September period.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has recently directed the relevant authorities to conduct public awareness campaigns using loudspeakers in neighborhoods to prevent dengue.
