The newly built Islamic Centre and Mosque in Lukavac, Bosnia
Doha, Qatar: The opening of the Islamic Centre and Mosque in Lukavac has marked a significant addition to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s religious, educational and community infrastructure, with the project receiving generous financial support from Qatar’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.

H E Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem Al Ghanim for the ministry’s support in financing the project. He described the centre as a prominent civilisational landmark and a valuable addition to the country’s religious, educational and social institutions, while highlighting the depth of cooperation between Qatar and Bosnia and Herzegovina in supporting humanitarian and community development.
The Islamic Centre and Mosque was officially opened in Lukavac on August 15, 2026, corresponding to 2 Rabi’ Al Awwal 1448 AH, in the presence of religious, official and diplomatic representatives. Its completion marked the culmination of a multi-year project that has developed into an important religious, cultural and social landmark for the city and surrounding areas.
Dr Kavazovic said the centre is among the major projects receiving special attention from the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina because of its religious, educational and social significance.
The centre is expected to serve Muslims in Lukavac, Tuzla Canton and neighbouring areas, providing an integrated platform for religious guidance, education and community activities.
It will host educational and religious programmes aimed at strengthening Islamic identity and promoting moderate religious awareness.
It will also provide an environment for the education and upbringing of younger generations, while supporting cultural and community initiatives based on cooperation, belonging and social responsibility.
The Grand Mufti praised Qatar’s continued support for religious and educational projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina, saying the Lukavac centre would remain a symbol of the close ties between the two countries and Qatar’s commitment to initiatives that serve Muslim communities and contribute to development and stability. The centre has been designed to serve a purpose extending beyond worship and daily prayers. It is intended as an integrated cultural, educational and social institution serving the local community.
Its facilities include multipurpose halls for conferences, seminars and cultural and community activities, as well as educational facilities for Islamic and general educational programmes. The centre also includes classes dedicated to Quran memorisation for children and young people.
Through these facilities, the project brings together worship, education, cultural activities and community service, strengthening its potential role as an important centre for religious and intellectual development in the region.
The centre is expected to contribute to the education of a new generation of Quran memorisers and students of Islamic sciences, while providing a platform for cultural and intellectual activities. It is also expected to support social cohesion and promote dialogue, coexistence and cooperation.
The Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina said the centre would serve as a base for a range of educational, religious and cultural programmes targeting different segments of society, further strengthening its role as a hub serving Muslims in the area.
