Doha, Qatar: The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the highest-scoring edition in the tournament's history, surpassing the previous record of 172 goals set during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The milestone was reached during the tournament's 59th match, the Group D clash between the United States and Turkiye at Los Angeles Stadium on June 25 (local time).

The opening goal by US defender Anthony Trusty marked the 173rd goal of the tournament, breaking the previous World Cup record.

"173 goals and counting – a new record in FIFA World Cup history! ????⚽," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said on Instagram.

Four more goals followed in the match as Turkiye secured a 3-2 victory, taking the tournament's total tally to 177 goals.

The previous record of 172 goals was set across all 64 matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In comparison, the 2026 edition surpassed that mark with five group-stage matches still remaining before the Round of 32.

"Surpassing the previous highest of 172 goals from Qatar underscores the excitement and attacking prowess that have already made the ???????????????????????? 2026 @fifaworldcup so unforgettable," Infantino added.
