DOHA: Texas A&M University’s Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Qatar Student Chapter has won the Outstanding Chapter of the Year award for the Middle East region, SPE President Helge Hove Haldorsen announced recently.
The award is the highest honour for a chapter, and recognises those that are exemplary in categories such as industry engagement, community service, operations and professional development. There are hundreds of chapters in the region and it is a remarkable achievement for Texas A&M Qatar SPE Student Chapter to win the award.
The Student Chapter works in close relation with the SPE Qatar Section and receives regular support under the patronage of Sheikh Faisal Al Thani.
Ahmed Rauf, chapter president, contributed to the award by organising events and winning regional competitions such as the Student Paper Contest and Petrobowl.
On campus, his team of Student Chapter Officers organised events and engaged students and the community on a regular basis throughout their terms in office.
Rauf will travel to USA to represent Qatar at the International Student Paper Contest, the Petrobowl, and to receive this prestigious award along with his team during the Student Awards Luncheon at SPE’s Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition in Houston, Texas.
In Qatar, there are over 520 professional members and over 200 student members at Qatar University and Texas A&M University, Qatar. As one of many sections worldwide, SPE Qatar Section’s mission is to collect, disseminate and exchange technical knowledge concerning the exploration, development and production of oil and gas resources and related technologies for public benefit; and to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence.
