Food safety lessons for students

DOHA: The Ministry of Municipality and Environment, represented by Doha Municipality, began yesterday an exhibition to educate the students of 80 schools about health and food safety with the help of painting and drawing.

The event “17th Annual Children’s Exhibition and Drawing Competition-2018” under the slogan of “Little Food Inspector and Food Hygiene”  kicked off yesterday at the headquarters of Doha Municipality. The exhibition was inaugurated by Director of Doha Municipality, Eng Jamal Matar Al Nuaimi.

“The exhibition aims at creating health awareness among school students and educating them scientific aspects on food safety in a bid to prevent them from infectious diseases caused by foods,” said Al Nuaimi speaking with media persons on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition.

He said that the students will be also introduced healthy foods.

“The exhibition will continue till March 22. More than 80 independent and private schools – primary and preparatory levels will be participating the exhibition. They will spend about four hours from 9 am to 1pm,” said Al Nuaimi. Several paintings and drawings about food safety and healthy foods will be showcased at the exhibition to guide the students to adopt healthy food habits.

The participating students will be given coloring books for drawing about healthy foods and food safety topics.

Best 20 drawings made by the students will be selected for awards. The winners will be given attractive prizes. “Health Control Section of Municipal Control Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment is supervising the exhibition,” said Al Nuaimi.

“The main purpose of the exhibition is to create awareness among students about food safety and to educate them how to handle different types of foods,” said Al Nuaimi adding that event will focus on teaching students how to check the food items before buying it.

He said that role of the inspectors on monitoring food items will be also highlighted to create awareness among the students. Speaking on educating students using drawing, Al Nuaimi said that drawing is an international language as it delivers the message easily. 

He said that best 20 drawings will be selected for awards and the winning drawings will be made public in different ways throughout Doha city in a bid to demonstrate the achievements of the students and to create awareness about the drawing competition.

“The municipal inspectors will explain the students about the food safety and how to handle food items and this idea will help the students to convert into their drawings,” said  Dr Shadi Salah Ziyada, Nutrition Advisor at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
