Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday that Canada is focused on building economic resilience and diversifying trade partnerships to reduce its reliance on the United States.
Carney said Canada understood the scale of the change in U.S. trade policy, what it meant for the Canadian economy, well before other countries and has had to adapt to that change by building at home and expanding trade partnerships with other countries.
He characterised US President Donald Trump's recent tariff threat as having been made in a broader context of trade negotiations with Canada, specifically ahead of the upcoming review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
"The president is a strong negotiator," Carney noted.
Carney on Monday announced a series of new measures aimed at making groceries and other essentials more affordable for Canadians.
The announcement is part of the government's plan to shift Canada's economy "from reliance to resilience," Carney said in a news release.
