Qatar suffered an unexpected setback yesterday when it was announced that Assim Madibo will miss the remaining part of the Gulf Cup due to a back injury.

The 21-year-old midfielder was taken to a local hospital for scans, QFA said yesterday.

The player needs rest to stage a complete recovery.

The prescribed rest means he will miss the remainder of the Gulf Cup.

Madibo was injured during Qatar’s first game against Yemen on Saturday during the second half.

Ahmed Fathi replaced Madibo in the second half as Qatar beat Yemen 4-0.

Madibo’s absence is a huge loss for the Qatari team, which is defending its title at Gulf Cup.

A replacement has not been announced but Qatar can call in a new player according to the tournament rules and regulations.
