BOSTON: Former Bruins Johnny Boychuk and Chad Johnson returned to Boston with their new team and helped the New York Islanders to victory on Thursday night.
Boychuk, the long-time Bruins defenceman traded to New York before the start of the season, played a strong game and Johnson, last year’s backup Boston goaltender, stopped 30 shots as the Islanders ended a two-game losing streak and improved to 5-2.
To make things worse for the Bruins, defenceman and captain Zdeno Chara was lost in the first period to a reported knee injury.
In Detroit, Justin Abdelkader scored with 43.5 seconds left in overtime to complete a comeback from a two-goal deficit and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Abdelkader scored from the slot in the extra period after the Red Wings scored twice in two minutes late in the third period, with goalie Jimmy Howard pulled for an extra attacker, to tie the game. In Los Angeles, the Kings won their fifth game in a row and dealt the Sabres their fourth consecutive loss. REUTERS
