DOHA: Qatar National Robot Olympiad 2014 began with 250 teams yesterday at Ladies Sports Hall in Aspire Zone.
Officials from Supreme Education Council (SEC), College of North Atlantic-Qatar (CNA-Q), Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Maersk Oil Qatar were present.
Students from primary, middle and senior secondary schools are competing in seven fields divided into three categories.
The categories include normal, open and General II, which has been included this year.
“On the first day, we have seen practical use of critical thinking skills in problem-solving, engineering and programming skills, team work and initiatives,” said Dr Theodore Chiasson, Dean, School of Information Technology, CNA-Q, organiser of the competition.
He said students confirmed through their brilliant performances that they have the ability to cope with challenges and efforts they are making to win a medal under strict rules and time limits.
CNA-Q is hosting the Olympiad under the patronage of Maersk Oil Qatar and support from SEC, and QP.
Sheikh Faisal bin Fahad Al Thani, Vice-General Manager, Maersk Oil Qatar, said “I congratulate all students and their trainers for fantastic efforts they made throughout training and preparations for the competition with the spirit of sportsmanship.”
He said the Olympiad is an excellent chance for students to showcase skills they have acquired in engineering and programming and improve skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
