Algiers: Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) of Algeria signed a memorandum of joint cooperation to strengthen coordination in the field of the protection and promotion of human rights between the two sides.
The memorandum was signed, on behalf of the NHRC, by Chairperson of the NHRC H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah, and on behalf of the Algerian side, by Chairman of the Algerian CNDH H E Abdel Majid Zaalani.
The terms of the memorandum stressed the need to consolidate and promote relations in the fields of human rights between the two countries, as well as to hold consultations between the two sides on all issues of mutual interest, determining the appropriate framework for action and close cooperation in the common interest and according to available resources, and bilateral coordination to the extent possible in activities related to human rights protection and promotion in the two sisterly countries, and providing the possibility for one of the parties to request cooperation from the other.
The memorandum was signed on the sidelines of the fundamental training course on “the establishment of National Human Rights Institutions in Accordance with the Paris Principles of the Year 93 to Introduce the International Human Rights System” organised by the Doha-based Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI), in cooperation with the National Human Rights Council in Algeria.
In her opening speech, Chairperson of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah confirmed the network’s efforts and programs to build and raise capacities, refine professional skills and change behaviors and attitudes related to human rights, in a way that contributes to strengthening the capacities of human rights defenders in order to promote and protect these rights to achieve a better tomorrow in which human dignity is protected.
Al Attiyah explained that the supreme message of the ANNHRI is human dignity, and directs all its efforts to combat violations and obtain rights in order to protect human dignity.
For his part, Chairman of the Algerian CNDH Abdel Majid Zaalani stressed in his speech the importance of this course, which will contribute to strengthening the capacities of specialists and will enable them to exchange experiences in the field of human rights protection with their counterparts, affirming the importance of supporting and developing training, informing all concerned about the Paris 1993 principles of human rights, and bringing points of view closer in this framework.
Zaalani reiterated the importance of strengthening cooperation between the National Human Rights Council of Algeria and the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions which was established during the seventh session of the National Human Rights Institutions in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott on April 27, 2011, in order to promote, develop and protect human rights in the Arab world.
