Walkway for people with special needs opens at Al Wakra Beach

Doha: Director of Al Wakra Municipality Eng Mohammed Hassan Al Nuaimi yesterday inaugurated a sustainable walkway for people with special needs and the elderly at Al Wakra Public Beach. The walkway is 85 metres long and two metres wide.

The opening ceremony was attended by Ambassador of the Netherlands to Qatar H E Marjan Kamstra and Director of Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality Mohammed Ali Al Khouri.

A number of directors and officials from Centre for Empowerment and Elderly Care (Ehsan), Ezdan Holding Company, Al Wakra Secondary School, Abdul Rahman bin Jassim Preparatory School and Al Khansa Primary School also attended the event.  The Dutch ambassador lauded Qatar for opening such projects that serve the category of people with special needs and the elderly. She expressed her happiness with this project, the first of its kind, which aims to support sustainability. 

Kamstra also praised the student participation in applied research on the ground.

Muhammad Hassan Al Nuaimi said the project comes in response to the desire of many citizens of Al Wakra city, especially the elderly category, who applied to the municipality to implement this project. He said that the project is in line to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the strategy of the Ministry of Municipality to achieve sustainable development in partnership with the various sectors and members of society.

Al Nuaimi said the project will cater to more than 33,000 people from all over the country and about 3,190 in the city of Al Wakra.

He said the project was implemented in coordination with the Supervisory Committee for Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in cooperation with private sector institutions within the framework of social responsibility initiatives.

He said Al Wakra Municipality welcomes all proposals to upgrade services in line with the standard of decent living in the Qatar, and adopts the initiatives of school students and youth, especially those related to environmental sustainability, which are solutions related to alternative energy and sustainable development.

Eng Soha Mahmoud, the Sustainability Officer in Al Wakra Municipality and the supervisor of the Sustainable Walkway project, reviewed the most important feature of the event. She said that the project was designed in a special way to serve people with special needs and the elderly, and added the length of the walkway 85 meters and connects its users to the nearest point to the sea and ends with a circular ring with a diameter of 8 meters.

Soha said the walkway contains service facilities such as a lounge whose seats are designed from recycled materials. She said the walkway has been decorated with plants and agricultural basins to provide environmental sustainability standards. Soha indicated that the project was implemented in record time.

She pointed out that the municipality was keen to speed up the implementation of high-quality sustainability conditions, in order to bring happiness and pleasure to our elderly and people with special needs and their families, noting that it will also serve fans of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Soha said that the project enables these groups to access points on the beach directly overlooking the sea.
