VP not a punching bag, Palace says; Binay to clarify resignation

Vice President Jejomar C. Binay was not made a punching bag by the administration during his stint in the Cabinet since resorting to personal attacks is never an option, a Palace official said yesterday.

“We do not share the assessment of the allies of the Vice President that he was made a punching bag by the administration,” Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said, responding to Makati Rep. Abigail Binay’s claim that his father quit his Cabinet post because he was tired of being the punching bag of President Aquino’s allies.

Binay’s daughter, who handcarried the vice president’s one-sentence resignation letter to Malacañang, had said that he felt her father was “very tired” of the beatings he had been getting from administration allies and resigning from the Cabinet could be his way to be “liberated.”

“We have always endeavored to keep public discourse on programs and policies and not centered on personalities in general,” Valte said.

But the Vice President’s spokesman for political affairs, lawyer Rico Quicho, said Binay will answer questions surrounding his resignation in a press conference tentatively set this afternoon at the Coconut Palace in Pasay City.

“VP will answer,” was Quicho’s short reply when asked about what will the public expect from the Vice President now that he has cut his ties from the Aquino administration.

On the other hand, Office of the Vice President (OVP) media affairs head Joey Salgado said Binay will issue a statement at the proper time.

Binay’s irrevocable resignation letter was delivered by his daughter to Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa in Malacañang Monday afternoon.
