Geneva, Switzerland: Qatar affirmed investing heavily in building strong, cohesive and dynamic families, in order to create a strong foundation for promoting and protecting human rights for all family members, with its commitment to achieve their goals of maintaining a prosperous country.

This came in a speech delivered by Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva H E Dr. Hind bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah, during an event organized by Qatar’s permanent delegation to the UN Office in Geneva, as well as the permanent delegation of KSA and the permanent delegation of Egypt in Geneva. The event was organised on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Families on May 22 in Geneva, with the attendance of several diplomats accredited to the UN Office in Geneva and their families.

She said that children deserve to live in a safe environment to grow properly, study, learn and pursue their dreams, pointing out that this embodies the role of family in society, which lies in ensuring that family members, especially children, enjoy human rights to the fullest, by protecting them and teaching them values and principals that can help them become good citizens in the future, and provide them with a sense of belonging.

This is the reason why the family is recognized as a basic unit in society, she said, adding that any impact on this unit inevitably affects society as a whole.

The Permanent Representative said that, despite the rapid changes in life, the family is still considered a model for preserving the social fabric by transmitting traditions, cultural values, customs and heritage from one generation to another, adding that the family remains the defender on the front line for the rights of its members against risks and challenges.

Her Excellency pointed out that the Internation Day of Families celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2024, noting that this day provides an opportunity to evoke family values as well as its role in life.

On this year’s International Day of Families, a devastating world is witnessed due to wars and conflicts that have cast a dark shadow on families around the globe, H E Dr. Al Muftah said.
