Doha, Qatar: Parents and guardians have been urged to take an active role in protecting children from cyberbullying and promoting safe and responsible use of digital technology, as the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) joins the "Digitally Aware Family" campaign.
In a social media post, the CRA stressed that early awareness and open communication can help protect children and strengthen their digital safety.
The CRA explained that cyberbullying involves using digital technologies to harm, embarrass or threaten others. It can include sharing harmful content, mocking or insulting others, spreading rumours or misinformation, and sending hurtful or threatening messages.
Children may experience cyberbullying when abusive or threatening messages or comments are directed at them, embarrassing photos or videos are shared without their permission, they are mocked or insulted online, false rumours are spread about them, or someone impersonates them or misuses their account.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to listen calmly, believe and support children without blaming them, and reassure them that cyberbullying is not their fault.
They should also encourage children not to respond to or retaliate against the bully, keep evidence such as messages and screenshots, use blocking and reporting tools, and seek help when necessary

Highlighting the importance of the internet, CRA noted that it provides children with opportunities to learn, communicate, and be entertained, hence the need to guide them towards using it safely and consciously.
It explained that children may encounter offensive messages or comments, fake links or prizes, age-inappropriate content, dangerous games or challenges, as well as fake images or videos created using artificial intelligence while surfing the internet.
Therefore, parents and guardians are encouraged to support their children and wards digitally by encouraging ongoing dialogue, reminding them not to share their personal information, warning them to avoid suspicious links, teaching them how to block and report inappropriate content or users, and encouraging them to ask for help when needed.
It also added that adults need to help children stay aware and safe by encouraging them to talk about the apps they use, follow family rules for internet use, choose content that is suitable for their age, tell a trusted adult if they face any problems, and protect their privacy by avoiding the sharing of personal information.
