Advisory Council approves draft law to regulate private schools

DOHA: Advisory Council in its regular session yesterday approved the draft law regulating private schools.

The Council had referred the draft law which was approved by the State Cabinet, to its Cultural and Media Committee for study. The committee listened to the education committee at Qatar Chamber, before making its recommendations.
The draft law comprising 47 articles divided into six chapters stipulates establishment of Outstanding Schools in partnership with the private investors and with government support.
The draft law replaces the old law governing private schools and stipulates new rules and regulations for licensing and monitoring of private schools.
The Council also approved the draft law stipulating stiffer punishments on private education centers for violations. Centers violating the rules can be closed for up to 60 days and their name boards can be removed under a court order.
The violating center can be forced to refund all the fees it collected from students.
The Advisory Council’s Services and Public Utilities Committee yesterday studied a floor request forwarded by a number of members on the cost of health insurance.
The meeting was attended the Minister of Public Health HE Abdullah bin Khalid Al-Qahtani and Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Affairs at the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) Dr. Faleh Mohamed Hussein.
The Minister explained SCH’s viewpoint on the floor request and responded to the issues raised by the Committee’s members. The Committee decided to complete study of the request at a future meeting.
