Washington - The US Senate rejected legislation early Saturday aimed at reforming NSA intelligence gathering, a blow to President Barack Obama and others who support ending the controversial bulk collection of Americans' telephone records.

The Senate immediately turned to consideration of a two-month extension of parts of the USA Patriot Act which are set to expire June 1 without congressional action, but that bill too appeared in jeopardy, leaving the fate of key national security provisions in limbo.
