Who knew that the distribution of solar-powered light sources to a diurnal, desperate island south of Occidental Mindoro would have such profound effects on both the receiver and the giver?

That’s exactly what happened when Watts of Love, an international solar lighting non-profit organization, reached out to give solar lanterns and headlamps to the poor families of Iling Proper on Ilin Island.

As what group founder Nancy Economou would personally experience, Filipinos reciprocate acts of selflessness like no other.

“The people we serve have nothing, but they’re always willing to give me the best place to sit in their homes or offer me their food and prayers,” Economou said in an interview with Manila Bulletin.

Ilin Island covers an area of 47 square kilometers, about the size of Valenzuela City. People there fish and dive for shells to make ends meet.

Economou also shared how seven families gathered their solar lamps provide light to a funeral in one remote village.

“They did this so the family’s relatives who came from far away areas could continue to keep each other company even after the sun had already set, enabling them to share memories of their honored relative,” she said.

“Their relentless drive to give despite having so little has made me a better person.”
