Doha, Qatar: The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has announced the launch of its 2026 online ‘First Cut Lab’, an advanced training programme designed to support filmmakers in refining their projects during the critical editing phase.
According to posts on DFI’s social media accounts yesterday, the lab is scheduled to run between July 23 and October 10, 2026 and the deadline for submission of applications is May 3, 2026.
The lab will bring together selected creative teams working on feature-length and short films, offering tailored mentorship aimed at strengthening both the artistic and commercial potential of their works.
The initiative will support four feature films, fiction or documentary, and one short film, with a focus on projects that have already reached the rough cut stage. Through a structured programme of consultations and workshops, participants will receive in-depth feedback from international film advisors, including creative producers, festival programmers and sales agents.
Each selected project will be represented by a small team comprising a director, producer and editor, reflecting the collaborative nature of the filmmaking process. These teams will present their rough cuts and engage in intensive discussions aimed at enhancing narrative structure, pacing and overall cinematic impact.
A key feature of the programme is its highly personalised approach. Participants will receive one-on-one guidance from a consultant editor, alongside input from three industry experts, with mentorship tailored to the specific needs of each project. Sessions will be conducted online through video conferencing, enabling close interaction despite geographical distances.
The lab format includes a preparatory meeting followed by either a one-day workshop for short films or a two-day workshop for feature projects. During these sessions, filmmakers will benefit from both individual feedback and collective discussions, providing a comprehensive evaluation of their work from multiple perspectives.
Following the main workshop, participants will have the opportunity to submit an updated cut of their film within one to two months. This will be accompanied by a follow-up consultation with their editing mentor, ensuring continuity in the development process. At the conclusion of the lab, each team will receive a detailed written report outlining recommendations for further editing and post-production.
