Agra--Three persons have been detained for their alleged role in the recent attack on a church in Cantonment area of the city, police said on Thursday.

Nasir, Zafar and Zaffruddin were detained on Wednesday for their role in vandalising St Mary’s Church in Agra Cantonment area in the wee hours on April 16, SSP Rajesh Modak said.

The accused confessed to be around the church on the night of the crime and could not provide an appropriate reason for their presence there, he said.

However, family members of the accused refuted the police claims and said that they were returning from a shopping exhibition at Ram Lila ground on the day of the incident.

The family members along with the activists of Peace Party protested at the Agra Collectorate demanding the immediate release of the accused.

The accused will be released if no substantial evidence is found against them, police maintained.
