Doha: After the announcement from two prestigious Lebanese newspapers, ‘As-Safir’ and ‘An-Nahar’ to stop publishing, As-Safir management informed its employees that it would stop publishing from Friday 1, April – both print and online - after 42 years of its launch.
The newspaper employees announced the same on their social media accounts.
As-Safir informed all their reporters to write their final report today Wednesday 30 of March, to be published in the final issue of the paper on Thursday 31, March
As-Safir, meaning The Ambassador, is a leading Arabic-language daily newspaper in Lebanon and is headquartered in Beirut. As-Safir was first published by Talal Salman on March 26, 1974 as an Arabic political daily.
The Lebanese media is currently facing severe economic crisis due to the current political situation and many publishers are struggling to survive in this scenario.
Editors of locally popular newspapers such as An-Nahar and Al Liwaa have also sent out memos to their staff signifying doom for the print era of Lebanese journalism, with the main reasons being instability in the region, financial debt and their inability to stay abreast of the information revolution, Al Arabiya English reported.
